So yes, this is the J2 remix of the Disney classic Aladdin (my favourite movie as a child).  Also this is a work in progress but I am very close to being finish. I will be updating chapters once a week so stay tuned!

Prologue

Chapter One

Jared’s heart is thudding hard against his chest as he runs with Harley in one arm and two loaves of bread and a few bottles of water in the other.

“STOP!” One guard yells, weaving around the townspeople.

After years of living on the streets of Austin, Jared knows every street, every hole in the wall and almost every person that regularly populate the marketplace – he’s learned who to stay away from and who are nice enough not to dob him into the police.

“Hey!” One overly large man yells as Jared just barely dodges him, causing him to drop his bags of groceries.

Jared is breathing hard, a plan already formulating inside of his head. He takes a sharp left, his hand wrapping around a long sturdy street pole and begins running a large circle around the guards.

He laughs when he looks over his shoulders and sees the oafs of the police squad looking around stumped.

Harley yips and Jared shushes him. He had found the puppy just a few weeks after it was born, abandoned by the pet shop for no reason that Jared could figure out.

“I said stop!”

Jared turns around and runs backwards, the Texas police department are mostly overweight men in their mid to late forties and Jared is in his prime, really, it is sometimes just fun to taunt them, “It’s just a little snack guys!”

“We’ll rip you open and take it back!” One officer yells.

They speed up and Jared’s starting to think that it was probably a bad idea to slow down. “Fuck!” Harley almost slips out of Jared's grip as he spins around and runs as fast as he possibly can.

There is a building coming up, Jared knows it well, he passes it regularly and some of the women there usually give him a hot dinner or a place to shower.

He’s relieved when the building comes into view, his legs are aching and his lungs are on fire with every breath that he draws in. Around the corner there are a few large bins that Jared hides behind while he waits for the guards to pass, they got unnervingly close and Jared really can’t be taken to prison, not now, not again.

Around four weeks ago he might have but now he has to look after Harley and if he is put away no one will be able to look after him. The possibilities of what could happen to his little bundle of fur flood his mind, starvation, road-kill, abuse from annoyed townspeople, who knew.

Jared holds Harley closer trying his best to be quiet while the cops stop a little too close for Jared’s liking.

Harley whimpers and he can hear the bark on the brink of Harley’s throat, “Shhhh… Shhhh… good boy.” Jared whispers patting the soft fur with his thumb.

The cops run past and Jared moves as fast and as quiet as he can.

“There he is!” One of the cops yell and Jared curses as he runs into the building and makes his way towards the staircase and towards the roof.

The twelfth floor is approaching; Veronica, one of the nicer ladies opens her door when she hears the commotion. “Getting yourself into trouble early, I see, aren’t we Jared?”

Jared stops just for her, giving her a kiss on the cheek “I steal only what I can’t afford…”

She laughs before retorting, “That’s everything.”

The thudding of the several cops boots approach too close, Jared quickly smiles at Veronica one last time before yelling, “I got to go, I’ll come around soon, send my love to Betty! I’ll be round for bingo soon. Bye!” quickly and turning toward the next staircase.

He knows that he could have gone into her house but the police have repeatedly told the residents of most of the buildings that Jared hangs around that if they are caught harboring him they will be fined and Jared just couldn’t do that to them.

Jared runs onto the roof and all of his muscles are strained and burning.

Harley barks, practically bouncing around in Jared’s grip.

“Not too far now, buddy.” Jared huffs.

There is a thick plank of wood that crosses over to the next building; Jared quickly walks along it mindful not to look down.

“There!” Jared hears behind him when he finally reaches the other rooftop.

“Fuck!” He quickly places Harley on the ground with a quick, “Stay…” and places the bottles of water on the ground along with the bread and pulls the plank away from the other building, using his foot to tip the wood upward making it easier to grab hold of and lift it away from the other side.

“You little shit!”

Jared pulls the door to the entrance open and runs inside down the staircase.

His ‘home’ is inside an abandoned building twenty minutes away, Jared has been living there for going on four years now. For someone like him it’s pretty much perfect. In summer he can sleep on a pile of old sheets that he stole off of some of the clothes lines and some are from the bingo ladies. On the top floor the roof is half caved in so Jared gets to look up at the night sky as he falls asleep and in winter he sleeps on the middle floor and sleeps under the sheets and during the seasons in between Jared will find some dry pieces of wood and paper and kindling to build a fire in one of the fire places. It’s not much, but to Jared, its home.

As he turns down the alleyway where he lives, Jared hears a whimper and some rustling, a tiny little sound and he quickly spins around on alert. It’s dangerous around these parts especially at night, there are more bars than homes or dining places and waking up to someone in his home isn’t strange to Jared. There have been times when guys have stumbled past him, pushed Jared up against the nearest wall or dragged him into an alley calling him some pretty horrible and crude names, he doesn’t like to talk about those nights but most of those times he can get away completely unharmed, before he lived this life he took self-defense classes and used to be the best student of his age-group and living on the street Jared has realized that you don’t need a gym to stay fit, running, jumping and climbing has definitely kept him in shape.

When Jared moves a garbage bag out of the way he sees two kids, the oldest looks no older than 8 or 9, dirt covers their faces and their clothes are tattered. The kids try to shrink into the trash behind them, terrified of Jared.

“Hey, nonono! It’s okay. I’m not gonna hurt you!” Jared tries to reach out to them, but the little boy grimaces and it breaks Jared’s heart. “Here.” Jared gives them a loaf of bread and a couple of bottles of water; sure he’ll be hungry tomorrow but he’ll be able to steal something else, it’s not a big deal, these kid’s look like they haven’t eaten in days.

The girl, who looks like she’s the eldest of the two, reaches slowly toward the bread and water. Jared smiles at them.

“Thank you,” She whispers.

“It’s no problem.” Jared takes another step closer and then feels Harley wagging his tail at the sight of new people. The little boy laughs.

“You wanna pat him?” Jared asks pulling Harley out from the crook of his arm and holds the puppy out to the children.

Their faces light up and the little boy scratches behind Harley’s ears.

Harley yips and the kids giggle.

“You know, if you ever need a place to stay,” The little girl takes a step back, one hand on her brothers chest pulling him away from Jared and Jared’s eyes widen when he realizes what he’s said. “No! No! Not like that,” He sighs, “If you ever are hungry again or scared or anything, I live right there,” Jared points to the dilapidated building, “Please come by if you need something, I promise I’ll try and help.”

The little girl looks at him hesitantly, “Why? What do you want from us?” She says in the tiniest voice Jared has ever heard and he really kinda wants to hug them, but then again he doesn’t want to scare them either. He’s torn.

“Nothing! I just…” Jared sits down in front of the kids, crossing his legs and putting Harley in between them. “I know what it’s like to be scared and alone and I can’t imagine how you’re doing it,” He rubs the back of his neck and looks down, “I had a baby sister so I know how to look after kids.”

“Oh,” She whispers.

The little boy tugs on her tattered dress, “I’m hungry.” He says and Jared’s seriously about to cry.

“Please, promise me that if you can’t find somewhere safe to sleep that you’ll come back. You can have your own room. I mean, it’s not much, but it’s better than sleeping outside.” Jared looks at her and tries to show how serious he is.

The little girl swallows hard and he can see absolute distress in her eyes. She finally nods and the corner of Jared’s mouth pulls upward into a crooked smile.

“Or even if you wanna come and play with Harley or somethin’, you’re welcome, okay?”

She nods again, “’Kay,”

“Good,” He sticks his hand out, “I’m Jared.”

The girl smiles, “I’m Eliza, this is my brother Ben.”

“Well, I have to go. I’m sorry,” Jared picks Harley up and walks toward his home, he tries his best to get indoors before happy hour starts, it’s safer that way.

“Thank you,” Jared hears her say as little footsteps run towards him. When he turns around Ellie wraps her arms around his waist, squeezing him tight. Jared kneels down and hugs her properly. “I’ll see you soon, okay?”

She smiles at him, pat’s Harley one last time before returning to her brother.

Before he can get to his front door Jared hears the mounting voices of townspeople, he sees Ellie and Ben run to see what’s going on and decides to follows them, he hasn’t seen anything like this since a suitor came to visit Governor Morgan’s kid, Jen or Jenny or Jen-something, some stuck up little bitch that has been hidden away most of their life.

When Jared reaches the crowd he sees a fancy, shiny SUV slowly driving towards the governor’s mansion. Jared’s heart almost gives out when he sees Ellie and Ben run out onto the road to chase something that Jared can’t see.

“NO! STOP!” Jared pushes through the crowd, before diving in front of the kids, shoving them out of the way and getting hit, the car rams Jared and Harley to the floor.

The man in the driver’s seat opens the car door, stepping down from the escalated height and stalks over to Jared who is still on the ground, gripping his throbbing ribs.

“The fuck do you think you were doing, dumbass?” He yells.

“What the – ow – fuck do you think you were doing?” Jared retorts, wincing as he stands up. “You were going to hit those kids!” He gestures over to Ellie and Ben who are huddle together on the edge of the road.

“The little brats should have watched where they’re going.”

Jared strides forward, pushing the man with the arm that isn’t clutching his ribs. “They’re kids!” He spits back.

The man grabs Jared by his shirt and throws Jared to the ground again. He howls with pain as he lands on his sore side. “Worthless little asshole!”

“Fuck you!” Jared hisses in between gasps for breath.

The man stands over Jared, “What are you gonna do? No-one gives a shit whether you live today or die tomorrow and the only thing that will be grateful for your existence will be the maggots that will eat away at your flesh when you are rotting in some hole in the wall.” He kicks Jared’s shin as he makes his way back to his car.

Jared winces as he pulls himself away. He never expected anyone to stand up for him and the police would do nothing to help him, he knows they think Jared has been a nuisance since the day he slept on these streets alone.

After he picks himself up he keeps his head tilted down, not meeting anyone’s gaze as he waits for the SUV to pass.

“Fuck! Oh shit!” Jared curses as he realizes that Harley ran away when they were knocked to the ground, Jared had been so distracted with telling that son of a bitch off that he didn’t even realize that Harley disappeared.

Jared searches for a good hour for the puppy and he’s on the brink of tears when he can’t find him. He thought he was holding together well, he though it was going to be easier now that he had a companion but he couldn’t even hold onto that long enough to make it want to stay with him. Jared limps the rest of the way home, he guesses that Ellie and Ben ran away when the SUV drove off and he doesn’t blame them.

~*~*~*~*~

Jared exhales when he finally sits on his makeshift bed on the top floor and stares out at the sky, the sun is still just peaking over the horizon and it doesn’t have the same effect that it usually does. Jared used to be able to look out there and feel at peace, he felt lucky, sort of, he had a roof – or at least part of a roof – over his head, he could get food and water and he had a couple of people that didn’t think he was wasting his breath.

He eats his bread and drinks his water and tries his best not to move too much, his ribs are in agony and he knows that if he needs pain medication he’ll either have to steal it – which is almost impossible – or go visit Veronica and see if she has any. The walk alone will be excruciating but he’s going to have to do it.

~*~*~*~*~

The night settles dark over the city, stars shine bright and the moon washes silver light over the buildings, Jared just watches as lights from distant homes flicker on and off. He tries to count them every night but before he can reach an accurate number he gives up. It’s some sort of entertainment. Jared didn’t have to do it much lately because of his new little companion. He sighs as he goes back to counting the lights.

“Hello?” A little voice calls from downstairs, “Mr. Jared, sir?”

“Er…Yeah?” Jared tips his head to the side as he listens to two pairs of feet walk up the broken, creaky stairs.

“Where are you?” She calls.

“In – in here!”

Her head pokes around the door frame and she tip-toes inside the depilated room.

“Hey, is everything okay?” Jared asks trying his best to turn around.

The bark lights Jared up straight away, he quickly turns and regrets it instantly as pain shoots through his body and he puts his forehead to the dusty floor and groans, trying not to swear.

Ellie sits down on her knees, soon followed by Ben a few feet away from Jared.

When Jared looks back up he sees Harleys excited little face. The puppy is almost vibrating caused by the rapid wag of his tail.

“Harley, boy! Come here!” Jared says carefully rolling over onto his back, letting the puppy lick his face. He laughs and does his best to turn around and sit properly facing the kids. “Where did you find him?”

“He run into one of the alleyways,” The little boy says.

Jared smiles at them, “Thank you. Thank you so much!”

The kids look sadly at each other when Ben looks out of the window at the darkened city.

He doesn’t ask the kids to stay; they just talk continuously throughout the night until Ben falls asleep wrapped in his sisters arms. Jared places a sheet over them, lies down on his bed, using his bicep as a pillow, pulls Harley in to the curve of his stomach and closes his eyes for the night.

This Jared flowed so naturally, it was easy to write him because it's so much like the original one.
I'm so close to finishing it so don't worry, it'll be up. :)
Thank you for your comment :D
